Buying Paintings for Relatives

I have found that people buying paintings for relatives usually have a very specific thing in mind when they set out shopping. It is very rewarding to find just the right painting for a space that really needs it. Sometimes color is the only consideration.

Content is also very appropriate to consider. If you are buying a painting for someone that has very distinct tastes, it is important to keep that in the forefront of your mind. The painting of a rooster might be great for one relative but not for another.

Size constraints need to be taken into account when buying paintings for relatives. If your Aunt Eloise lives in a small apartment, buying a painting for her that takes up an entire wall is not a good idea. It is a good idea to take a look at the place the painting will go before purchasing one.

Color can be a big factor in the buying of a painting. If the color clashes with your relative’s décor, they will probably not be very excited about hanging it. If the color is just right, it will hang on their wall for a very long time.

Religious themed paintings are difficult to buy for friends, but easy to buy for relatives. More than likely, you know what religion your relatives adhere to and what symbols are most relevant to it. Jewish symbolism is lost on a Christian family and vice versa.

Choosing to buy paintings for relatives based on the artist’s previous work is also a good method of finding great art. If your relative already has purchased art from an artist that they like and that they hang prominently in their home, then it is a safe bet to buy another piece from the same artist.

Sometimes buying a nice painting for a relative has a point of inspiration, like a vacation. If your mom and dad just visited Paris, a nice painting of Paris might be a great choice. It is good to know what landmarks they enjoyed most and find an artistic representation of it.

I have some relatives that I’ve bought paintings for that were interested in the Middle Ages. I found some very nice reproductions of the work that was popular in that time period. Buying reproductions is acceptable if the painting is prohibitive in cost.

There is an aunt that I adore that is always buying painting for relatives. Her heart is in the right place, but she has a hard time picking paintings that are appropriate for the recipient. She bought her daughter a lovely painting that was Baroque and completely did not fit the feel of her home.

Landscape paintings done in the Romantic style look so nice in my uncle’s home. I bought him a reproduction of a Monet that he hung in his study. I enjoy watching him study that painting.

My little sister has requested that anyone buying her a painting should stay away from Van Gogh. She has equal dislike for Cezanne and Gauguin. I’m not sure why she feels so strongly about Modern and Contemporary art.

I happen to like cubist paintings by Kandinsky. My husband bought me a reproduction of a Kandinsky that I keep in my den. I can look into it and see so many different things. The painting comes to life and I feel so many emotions when I look into it.

Learn Indian Cuisine

When I hear curry, I always think of Indian curry. And to tell you honestly, there had been a time when I thought that it’s the national food of the seventh largest country on the planet. But thanks to my job as a researcher, I’ve begun to learn Indian culture more. With over 20 states, each of which has its own sort of staple food, India sure has contributed a lot in the culinary world. And I found it fascinating that Indian food not only have curious names, which aren’t exactly easy to spell, but they also have a distinctly (for lack of a better term) “Asian” taste.

I learned that Indian dishes and ways of cooking vary from place to place. But it can be said that generally Indian dishes are spicy. Almost every recipe, be it for a main course dish or a drink, requires at least a pinch of spices and herbs. The best example would be, of course, the Indian curry, which is often eaten with some kind of flat bread. But, hey, curry and flatbread are not all there is to Indian cuisine. So, for those like me who are familiar with Indian cuisine as much as they are with Greek, I’ve listed down some of the most common Indian food—their names as well as their descriptions.

Hyderabad biryani – This is a dish made from basmati rice and goat meat. Though beef and pork can be used, goat meat is more popular because most Indians are Muslims and Hindus, and thus do not eat meat from cattle (considered sacred by Hindus) and pig (considered dirty by Muslims). Basmati rice is a long grain variety that is known for its distinct fragrance and taste. It’s also not that sticky compared to other rice grain varieties when cooked.

Roti and chapatti – These are types of flat bread made from finely milled flour. They don’t have any yeast or baking powder, but they are made with a little oil or ghee (purified or clarified butter) to make them pliable just like the Mexican soft tortilla. They are usually eaten with curries and vegetables. But unlike with a tortilla, you don’t wrap it around the filling. You simply have to fold the roti or chapati such that it creates a “scoop” at one end with which you can spoon the curry.

Rogan josh – Taken from a Persian phrase meaning “cooked in oil”, this dish is just one of the many varieties of Indian curry. It includes lamb meat, oil or ghee, and different spices, such as paprika, cardamom, cumin, cinnamon, and cloves, which give the dish a red color and an exquisite spicy aroma.

Samosa – A very popular snack in India , samosa is also eaten in many other parts of Asia and even in western countries. Samosa is what would otherwise be called fried dumpling in other parts of the world. Samosas in India , however, are usually triangular in shape. Its stuffing includes mashed potatoes, chili, onion, coriander, cumin seeds, and sometimes meat and paneer (Indian version of white cheese).

Masala dosa – To westerners, this is crepe. Just like crepes, the masala dosa is cooked on a griddle or flat pan. The only difference is that its batter is made from rice and urad dal (a type of lentil) pastes. It may be wrapped around a filling, forming a triangle like a quesadilla, or it may be eaten with any kind of chutney (Indian sauce or salsa made from spices, herbs, fruits, and vinegar).

These are just some of the most popular Indian dishes. While they say that Indian cuisine appreciation depends on one’s taste, but I guarantee, if you learn Indian style food preparation, you’ll definitely appreciate them even more.

Learn Behind The Hindi Silverscreen

During the conventional times, education and information dissemination was limited into scholarly readings and classroom discussions. Now with the rise of the modern ways and beliefs more and more people and countries are taking advantage of the gift of innovative technology. Learning is not anymore limited to the stiff four corners of the library or the classroom. Various forms of media have come into the learning scene. With this in mind, let’s take a look at how you can learn the Hindi way via a look at Bollywood.

During the past years India has gradually improved in terms of industry and entertainment. Its film industry which is based in Mumbai has made lots of heads turn. The dynamic development of the country’s entertainment scene paved the way for the birth of what is now known as Bollywood. It is the popular and informal tag used to identify the film industry of the Hindi language. Bollywood is actually a mix of Hollywood and the former name of Mumbai, which is Bombay.

The term Bollywood has been incorrectly used because of its rising popularity. Technically, it is only a part of the Indian film industry and should not be confused for the totality of the Indian entertainment scene. At present Bollywood is regarded as the largest film producing body in all of India and has slowly clawed its way into becoming one of the respectable film producing centers across the globe.

Bollywood is appropriately identified as Hindi cinema although there have been common usage of poetic Urdu terms and words. It has also begun producing movies and shows wherein Indian English is utilized to fill in songs and dialogues. Furthermore, more films are seen as having straight English words, phrases, and even whole sentences as the showcased dialogue.

Let’s learn more on how the term Bollywood actually came into the picture. The term dates back to the 1970s during the phase of the movie industry when India was said to be on top of the game even outscoring the US in film production. Since then, there have been several people who tried to claim recognition of creating the word. These individuals include the likes Amit Khanna, a known scholar, lyricist, and filmmaker and Bevinda Collaco a journalist.

Tollywood is another term that inspired the creation of the tag Bollywood. This is the identity associated with the cinema of West Bengal. During the 1932 stint of the Indian film industry Bengali was said to be the main focal point. The name Tollywood was actually the earliest Hollywood-inspired tag and was based in Tollygunge. Bollywood took the limelight when the Mumbai-based film industry took the lead role from the ones in Tollygunge as the center of the film industry in India.

The visual means of communication are growing more and more popular in terms of influence and patronage. This is because you can really learn a lot of things even by just keeping yourself relaxed in the safety and comforts of your home or office. You are also assured that the areas and scopes of learning are limitless. The networks can reach as far as the Hindi world and as close as that of your loved ones’ hearts.

Nearly Extinct Languages

Languages are not just for communication. It is a social product and the transmitter of culture. It means that languages are the reflection of the songs, stories, traditions of the current generation as well as the past. It is a reflection of the society and the culture we live in. Linguists would often say that to understand language, you would need to immerse yourself on the culture behind the language, and vice versa.

Languages change along the changes that society and culture experience. It is dynamic, new words are being introduced sometimes influenced by other languages. The life of a language can be measured if a population that speaks it as a primary language still continues to live. But when the population of the native speakers is gone, the language is often categorized or referred to as an extinct language. Even if there are still younger generations left, if they choose to speak a different language as their tongue, then the language could still be considered extinct.

Latin is an extinct language. Before it is included in subjects taught in school, later on, it was removed and modern and more important subjects replaced it. Even if the language is still extinct, it does not mean that nobody can speak it. There are still people who can speak Latin, but it is not used as a language for communication. But Latin inspired or infused with other words to produce more words.

Another situation that may lead to the extinction of a language would be through eradication or genocide of the entire population who speaks the tongue. There could be survivors but they be merged into other cultures and eventually adapt these cultures as their own. This would be the case of Native American tribes.

Linguists and experts have agreed that the rate of extinction of language is becoming alarming. According to the New York Times and National Geographic, there is one language dying in every fourteen days. By 2100, about 7,000 languages would be extinct. This would be more than half of the languages we currently have. There are five places where the extinction of language is happening fast, it is in Northern Australia, Central South America, North America’s upper Pacific coastal zone, Eastern Siberia and Oklahoma and southwestern United States. Sad to hear, is that there are about 500 languages which are spoken by less than ten people.

To deal with this, there are projects which aim to help prevent the extinction of languages. The first one would be identifying the places where language extinction occurs. These language recovery programs would include recording of the endangered language, and conduct studies that would help experts and linguists determine how language and cultural diversity affects the endangered language. These programs also aim to increase the awareness of the public about this issue.

Unfortunately, the public are still not aware the effects of language extinction. Some would say that the extinction of a language would be justified enough because the language is obsolete. Actually, the strong link of language to culture and the people’s world view are among the things that would be most affected.

The extinction of languages is not just about the death or loss of a different set of vocabulary and words. In a bigger sense, it would signify the loss of a culture and history imbedded on the language itself.

Art Auctions: Greco-Roman Statuary

The ancient civilizations that have come before this present period of time have always left behind some truly unique pieces to others after them to gain some insight as to what that society may have been like. We learn much from the artifacts collected by archeologists, and their attempts throughout the Mediterranean region of the world, where the peoples of Greece and Rome had originally found their home. Though much of these items are priceless works that cannot be just bought and sold, there are versions of some famous works that can be much cheaper for the casual shopper to purchase.

Many pieces of the genuine article are sometimes found wherever the Greco-Roman styling of things has been prominently featured in architecture or artwork, and there are very many varieties that you might consider as being included in the category with statuary, such as ornately crafted vases and busts. Some of these aspects are certainly more common than many other varieties of this kind of work, with replicas of all of these items is much more common then one may think before coming to understand the rarity of these things, and that genuine articles will be priceless artifacts in some cases.

With the auctioning of statuary from an era previous, though, you can expect the pricing to be an obvious obstacle. Unless adequate replicas can be found in someone’s catalog for a much cheaper price, then the buying of these curious grouping of items should be left to those with skill to know what they are getting. Though this opinion may seem conceited, a person determined to find and retain a piece of Greek statuary should never feel as though it is out of their grasp to do so, and one should always know the rules when coming to realize what it can take to get such a wonderfully preserved piece of work.

In this light, replicas can be a much cheaper and functional means of finding the many differently appealing styled pieces to complete your collection of Greco Roman objects, and there are many prints of Greco Roman artwork for sale to be had for those art collectors thinking within a budget. The actual pieces can be too much for any collector to reasonably purchase, as many pieces of that nature are housed within established places like museums, and exclusively linked to one association or another of experts that collectively buys and cares for the pieces.

For some of the smaller pieces from the age have been passed between collectors for many, many years, and still retain some hint of the past that created them. Art auctioning has the flavor for some peoples’ tastes in the expensive, but the point of an art auction does not have to exclude anyone excited by the items put up for sale, anyone that feels an urge to acquire pieces from an ancient past should be able to participate with a little research into auctioning. Though it may seem overwhelming at first, the experience of an art auction can be a truly special event, and the pricing should never spoil an art auction for those new to it.

With statuary of as historic a nature as the Greco-Roman period, and you consider the history behind some of the pieces, you will better understand somewhat the reminders that float through to us from history’s fingers. Much of what know of their culture has been passed down for many thousands of years, and it is remarkable to see how the themes and subject matter has evolved as it relates to the centuries gone by, as all manner of time period has broken down into our own present day settings. Greco Roman statues give us a literal model of how they perceived the world around them, and though similar and plausible for making comparisons against our own culture, those cultures from a distant past can be great reminders for us to look to for inspiration.

Grading in homeschooling

Grading in homeschooling is done by the teacher-in-charge. In most of the cases, this means mom! In this situation, grading can get a bit tricky because it can be a little difficult to grade your own child. There is no benchmark against which you can evaluate your child’s performance. In most cases, you also have no awareness of how well other children are doing. So, obviously the traditional method of grading is perhaps not the best method to follow.

When grading a child undergoing homeschooling, it is more important to assess whether the child has understood the subject that is being taught. Inherent in this is the fact that if the child has not understood something, you will go over it again. This will work in your child’s favor in 2 ways. Firstly, the child knows that if he or she fails to catch on, the topic will be repeated till it is mastered. Secondly, the child also knows that once the topic has been mastered, he or she will get full credit for his hard work. Getting full reward for the hard work put in is a great motivational factor, especially for kids.

When assessing your child’s abilities, do not allow emotions to overcrowd your rationale. Do not yield to the cries and tears of your child if he or she resists certain topics or subjects. If mastering these skills is necessary, then you as the teacher (and not as the parent alone) have to go over the topic over and over till it sinks in. When dealing with tougher concepts, the child may get restless and may even show frustration or belligerence. When the child is still young and unable to understand the importance of his lessons, it is your responsibility to see to it that the child develops the skill set necessary for future growth.

In case you belong to a state that requires yearly tests, this will help you to judge your child’s ability vis-à-vis his peers. Even if it is not mandatory, you may want to test your child every year. These tests will reveal the variations in the child’s learning pattern. It may show up unexpected areas of strength and hitherto unknown areas of weakness. This enables you to structure your teaching to cover the areas that are weak, and build upon the areas that are strong.

In case your state requires a homeschool report card, keep a record of the yearly development and scores of your child. Include pertinent areas like punctuality, discipline etc in the report. You may also need to keep a record of the number of working days and attendance schedules.

While grading your child, make sure that you use as many external tests as possible. There are several websites that deal with the various age groups, and allow free downloading of question papers. This is an excellent and cost-effective method to assess your child. Homeschooling, if done in the proper manner, will boost the child’s confidence because he will be studying to satisfy his natural curiosity. The scores therefore will reflect his true intelligence.

Tropical Betta Fish

For many years, the Siamese Betta fish has been exclusively kept by hobbyists in Siam (now Thailand). Presently, the Betta Tropical Fish has grown in popularularity all over the world, although not for the sole purpose of fish fighting but as an aquarium pet. Through the years of delicate cultivation, pet stores took consideration on the various varieties from their original ancestors. Rather of just single colors, they can now be bought in a wide range of shades such as red, blue, black, dun, and yellow.

Also, the fins of the Betta tropical fish have significantly increased and are much complicated; amongst the various kinds of varieties available are the Delta Tail, Crown Tail, Half Moon etc. The male Betta fish have long prominent fins and do all the aggression. On the other hand, females have shorter fins and are not as prominent in color as the males. Fascinatingly, Bettas are air thrivers; they have a special organ, the lanyrinth, to transform water molecules into oxygen and they will surely die if they cannot reach the surface.

The natural habitat of Betta tropical fish is warm rice paddies in the Southeast Asia. Found mostly in leaves and branches of outgrowths, these predatory fish hunt for small creatures such as insect larvae and shrimp.
Even though the Bettas you can find in pet stores today have been bred in captivity, their aquarium should mimic their natural environment. Thus, the fish tank that have aquatic plant and that has slow water currents will be appropriate. A shade, with a few openings to provide air passage, must also be provided to avoid them from jumping out the tank.

Bettas thrive in warmer temperatures so the fish tank should be maintained between 75-86 degrees Fahrenheit with a bit of acidity (6.5 pH ) Their nutritional diet should composed chiefly of protein flakes and foods such as brine shrimps, worms etc. Bettas can expand to about 3 in. And could live up for three years if well-cared for. As far as the aquarium residents are concerned, Bettas can get along with most tropical fish. However, it is not advisable to keep them with aggressive species such as those tropical fish that are attracted to pick fioght with elaborate fins. Male bettas can be maintained in the same aquarium only if they are well-maintained, or else you can assume some injuries or even fatality.

Betta tropical fish procreate in a special and interesting way. The male will create numerous bubbles at the surface and create a floating love nest. Then, he would try to woo a female by showing his fins on display; the colors will be in their most vivid intensity and the impressive state also.

If the females are attracted and ready for a love romance, her coloration will also change and she will be covered with dark stripes. Her belly will also be prominently rounder and she would start releasing eggs.

This type of courtship can get difficult with much chasing and aggression that could lead to some minor injuries. When the couple is ready to mate, they will swim in the bubble nest and will entangle their bodies. The Betta male will squeeze the female to release the eggs that will be fertilized by the male.

Keeping Betta tropical fish is easy if you have the passion, determination and enthusiasm.

The Loyal Working Companion Dog: American Pit Bull Terrier

This breed of dog, also fondly called as APBT, is known for its loyalty and intelligence. The dogs with this breed make excellent companions since they are very aggressive because of their protective nature.

How, then, are they different from the Staffies? For the UKC or the United Kennel Club, Staffies and APBT are of the same breed but many disapprove of this suggestion. For instance, if the American Kennel Club has an American Staffordshire terrier, it will be registered as an American pit bull terrier by the United Kennel Club. Furthermore, many breeders noted that their lineages have been separate for a long time already for these dogs to be still considered as having the same variety.

Meanwhile, the American Kennel Club does not register a UKC-listed American pit as an American Staffie. In order to gain dual-registry, the dog must initially be recorded as an AKC American Staffie before it can be listed with the UKC as an American pit bull, and not the other way around.

The following are some of the basic facts breeders would really love to know about APTBs:

Category: Terrier

Living Environment: either outdoor or indoor

Coat: smooth, shiny, thick, and short

Colors: color varies

Height: between 18 and 22 inches

Weight: between 30 and 60 pounds

Temperament: courageous, full of energy, and loyal; should be socialized early on with other animals especially with children

Health Issues: heart murmurs and mange

Care and Exercise:
• Bathe when necessary.
• Brush their coat only occasionally using a brush with firm bristles.
• Rub down their coat with a towel or a chamois to remove hairs that are loose.
• Their physique requires a regular exercise routine which includes a daily play time and/or running along a bicycle while on a leash.
• They should be on leash while walking in public places.

Origin/History:

The ancestors of APBT came to the US in the mid-1800s with some Irish-Boston immigrants. Like the Staffie, they were originally bred from bulldogs and terriers. Since APBT is a forerunner to the Staffie, it was also molded to be a fighting dog. However, the Americans made their variety some pounds heavier and trained them to have a more powerful head.

Bull baiting and dog baiting were prohibited in England so bull terriers were no longer bred for bouts. It is in America where the pit bull also gained its popularity for many uses and reasons like:

1. It was used to embody the country in one WW1 artwork.
2. Well-known companies like the Buster Brown Shoe Company and even RCA used the breed as mascots.
3. Petie, a pitbull, was one of the stars in, “Our Gang”, a well sought children’s TV series.
4. A mix breed called Stubby was transformed into a popular and decorated WW1 hero.
5. Pits became good companies of pioneer families on their journeys.
6. Jack, a working pit bulldog was owned by Laura Wilder of lines of books called “Little House”.
7. Popular people like Helen Keller and US President Theodore Roosevelt owned the variety.

Here is some history about the cause of dilemma regarding the registries of APBTs.

In 1898, the United Kennel Club or UKC was structured to provide fighting guidelines and registration for APBT as fighting dogs. Later, there were breeders who shun away from dog fighting so they asked the AKC to recognize their pits so they would be fit for performance events like dog shows.

In 1935, the AKC approved of their petitions but the dogs were registered as Staffordshire Terriers, naming them after the little province in England that the breed was known to have originated from. Thus, many breeders have dogs that have dual-registry.

It is interesting to note that Petie, which was one of the stars in the, “Our Gang” TV series was the first breed that was dual-registered to be Staffordshire Terrier/Pit Bull. However, the UKC later started registering other performing-type varieties and they also began holding dog shows comparable to those of the American Kennel Club.

The AKC soon sealed its studbooks to APBTs. They allocated registration to those pit breeds with lineages that are listed as Staffies. For a little time during the 1970s, the AKC disclosed the American pits to their studbooks.

In 1973, the American KC decided to add the word “American” with the pit’s name to discriminate it from a Staffie. At present, those dogs with mixed APTB-StaffIe parents are recognized by UKC and even the American Dog Breeders’ Association as “American pits or American pit bull terriers”.

Nowadays, the pit has employed as search and rescuers, police/armed service dogs, livestock workers, and even as therapy animals because they are good as companions and working dogs.

Moreover, the variety can even compete in dog sports such as herding, obedience, and conformation, French Ring, and Schutzhund. Breeds of this type can be very loving as pets for everyone. The physical demands and harshness of various activities developed a healthy, strong, and stable animal.

If you want to have an APBT as a pet, be sure that the puppy is handled well and properly socialized. A solid and good training will surely produce an obedient, tranquil, and good companion or even a working dog!

Practical Reasons for Learning Correct Grammar

Not known to many, proper grammar and usage is very essential for effective communication. Many skeptics would argue that people would surely understand the message even if the usage is erratic. In truth, it could be. But it takes a knowledgeable, decent, and wise person to make sure his words are grammatically correct when conveying messages. It could indicate so much about the overall education and bearing of any person.

Practically, it is also observed that improper use of simple grammar like subject-verb agreement could possibly bring about misunderstandings. Anyone could truly be difficult to understand and could bring across the message wrongly if there are grammatical errors in words and sentences. In worst cases, exact messages could also be altered or lost. No one would want to secure poor perception from other people due to improper grammar and usage.

Perception – A person who uses grammar correctly could be perceived by other people as a person of great knowledge and education. It is just reasonable that use of improper grammar could develop a perception that he is uneducated or he is not well-read. In reality, most people are not judgmental, but it is just natural for anyone to make sure he gets good perception from everyone.

Miscommunication – You always have to make sure your message is received by its recipient in its proper and accurate context. Use proper grammar to do so. Some people are laughing out at compositions that are not grammatically correct. Worse, many others just simply ignore messages that are beaming with poor grammar.

Job opportunities – These days, most employers are particular about job candidates’ speaking and writing fluency. Most of them are hinging on job applicants’ ability to send messages across accurately, without altering messages. Good communication is also essential to all job activities. Thus, good grammar is always counted. It may not be directly stated in a job post, but it sure matters.

Offensive – Some people take improper or poor grammar as offensive. This is particularly true in the case of people who speak in slang language. More often, messages sent in poor grammar construction are ignored by recipients.

Business – Needless to say, marketing materials with poor grammar could possibly result to loss of prospective sales. Customers usually do not buy products from any manufacturer that obviously does not even care to sell itself and its goods properly. Again, use of improper grammar is considered offensive by many consumers.

Readability – As mentioned, the readability of any material could be altered or affected by poor grammar. Many people are already aware that grammar and usage could greatly affect messages. For example, improper use of subject-verb agreement in sentences could lead to confusion about the number of subjects involved.

Seriousness – There could be a tone of seriousness in compositions that are written in a way that they are grammatically correct. Some people could not help but laugh at grammatical errors. It might spoil the overall tone and intended impact of your communication.

Respect – Most people who could use proper and correct grammar are often enjoying respect from others. This could still be attributed to the right perception of people. Those who could always come out with grammatically correct compositions could be considered as people who take time to make sure there is always quality in outputs and communication.
